Built by people who answer the phone

We remodel kitchens, bathrooms, basements and whole houses across Central Indiana, and build the decks and porches on the outside of them — and we run the business the way we would want a contractor to treat our own house.

Why we started

Most of our estimates start the same way

A homeowner walks us around the back of the house, points at something another crew built, and tells us what happened.

The calls that stopped getting returned halfway through. The price that moved twice after the contract was signed. The tile that came away from the wall a year later, because nobody waterproofed behind it properly and the water had been getting in ever since.

We started Cedar & Steel to be the company that conversation is not about.

In practice that means unglamorous things. Answering the phone. Putting the whole scope in writing before anyone signs anything. Telling a homeowner their framing is sound and they only need a resurface, on a day when the full rebuild would have been the bigger check. Building the parts nobody will ever see — the waterproofing, the framing, the rough-in — as carefully as the finishes they will show their neighbors.

We work in Carmel and the towns around it, and we keep it that way on purpose. When you build close to home, the people you build for are the people you run into at the hardware store. That tends to keep everyone honest, us included.

How we work

Four things we hold to

  • We answer the phone

The most common complaint homeowners have about contractors is not price or quality — it is being ghosted. Call during business hours and you get a person.

  • The quote is the price

A written, itemized scope with a fixed number. The only thing that changes it is a change you ask for, or something genuinely hidden that we show you before touching.

  • We tell you when the answer is no

If a repair is smarter than a rebuild, or your basement should not be finished until the water is handled, we will say so — even when it costs us the bigger job.

  • The frame matters more than the finish

Anyone can make a deck look good on day one. What you are paying for is the flashing, the footings, and the spans you will never see again.
